Croatia ranks 28th on Newsweek´s list of best countries to live in

Croatian Times

Croatia is the 28th best country to live in in the world, according to Newsweek.

The magazine ranked the 100 best countries according to the criteria of education, health, quality of life, economic dynamism and political environment.

At the top is Finland, followed by Switzerland, Sweden and Australia.  Croatia is just four spots below its EU neighbour Slovenia, in 24th place.

Croatia received the most points in the education and health categories.

Among the top ten countries, seven are in Europe. Croatia ranks ahead of Poland, Slovakia, Estonia and Hungary.

Very surprising! The only 1 thing Croatia has is the quality of life. For the other 4 criteria they rate poorly, that's pretty obvious. A surprise they made it so low!

Follow the dream, and not the money!

Here is a link to the actual article.

Education
Croatia has an amazing literacy of 98.1% which is almost as high as the US even though the average person is in school for 2 less years in Croatia. I guess thats a testament to the language being phonetic and even my Grandmother who is from WW2 era in school is literate while only being in school for no more than 4 years total.

Health
Average life expectancy is 68 in Croatia compared to 70 in the US.

Quality of life
This category has a lot of factors but Croatia seems to be good on income inequality being pretty close to income equality but not as good when it comes to gender equality. The homicides per 100,000 people is low at less than 2. Unemployment is pretty high at 16%.

Economy
Growth rate of the economy is relatively low. Croatia is very low on the list for "ease of doing business at 103rd place.  They also have a long new business start time at 22 days.

Political Environment
Croatia has relatively good marks on political freedom, but could improve on Political participation.  They can also improve on Political stability. Overall pretty good though.

I think the overall picture shows that some work needs to be done within the government of Croatia to make doing business there more friction free (this really helped Ireland 10 years ago), and reduce the red tape it takes to get a business started.
